VALUELESS CHEQUE.
ATTEMPT TO PAY FOR TAXI,
MAN PLACED ON PROBATION.
Pleading guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain .£ls from Charles Claude Nicholson by means of a valueless cheque for that amount, drawn by W. H. Hughes on the. Symonds Street branch of the Bank of New Zealand, Henry Neil Whisker' (Mr. K. C.Aekins) was to-day ordered to take out a prohibition order and he was placed on probation for twelve months. Chief Detective Hammond said that on August 1G . Nicholson and another man had been drinking, and had chartered a taxicab to drive them to Otahuhu. They drove all over the place and Nicholson tried to pay for the fare with a valueless cheque. "He is not a bad sort of a fellow," said the chief detective, "and has never been before the Court before. He got nothing, but he attempted to get something." Counsel submitted that accused was drunk at the time. He did not know where he got the cheque from. Drink was his failing. He had-a wife and four children, but they were living on charitable aid. Mr Hunt: He is not the sort of man who should go riding in taxicabs, then. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell said accused had been drinking heavily and suggested that he should be prohibited. . , Mr. Aekins asked. for suppression of accused's name, stating that Mr. Campbell thought it a case for suppression. Mr Hunt: I am not going to make that'order. If I suppress his name I will have to suppres 3 everybody s.
