The first series of games in the Business Houses' competition for the Farmers' Trading Co.'s cup was completed yesterday. Three games were played during the week, and the programme will be continued on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Abels Ltd. met Training College and ran out winners by three goals to nil. The: game was very even in the first spell, but in the second Abels livened up, and Mellor scored twice in rapid succession. Jaffrey netted from close in shortly afterwards. For Training College, Mallay, in goal, and Bush at back, were outstanding. Morris, Abels' custodian, was sound, and ■ effected many saves. Automatic Telephone! Exchange proved too strong for Grand Hotel. Although the Hotel lost by a margin of three goals, the team played much better "than in former years. Bob Innes was safe and versatile a ; t centre-half for the losers, and broke up most of the opposing attacks. P. Humphreys and S. Jones were prominent for the. telephonists. The score was a draw at half-time, but Auto Telephone forged ahead and the final score was:— .Auto.-Telephone-5,- Grand Hotel 2. A strenuous; game was fought out between- Farmers' Trading and Auckland Milk Co., Ltd. (holders), and was by far the best match so far. Paton turned out in goal for Farmers, and Morrison, Bush and Woods made a strong defensive trio for Farmers.' The ' game was very fast, and at times thrilling. Farmers won by two goals to nil. The ground was in a wretched state when Shell Oil Co. met Customs. The game was fairly even, and at half-time no score had been registered. Superior combination by Shell Oil prevailed throughout the last spell, and Kay scored twice and Grant once for the winners. Truman broke fcbrpugli for Customs from a long pass by Nicholson, and this was their only score. The best for Customs were Bach, Cleal and Brockett, and for Shell Oil Co. Chalmers, Wilson and Fogarty were prominent. Result: Shell Oil 3, Customs 1.
