A ROTORUA PROBLEM.
HOT STREAMS NEAR. ROAD.
STEAM LOWERS VISIBILITY.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent.)
ROTORUA, Thursday,
Steam' from the boiling pools on the Kuirau Reserve, causing danger to traffic on.the Lake Road at Ohinemutu, was the subject of comment at the meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council on Wednesday evening.
Representations had been made to the Tourist Department, asking for the diversion of a hot stream,, but the manager of the, Department declined to recommend the Minister to agree to the diversion of the surplus hot water to anything but a natural water-course. The pools, he said, furnished hot water for the King George V. Hospital, and it would be unwise to interfere, with the possibility of prejudicing the supply. It was possible the council might also meet with opposition from natives who used the water for laundry purposes. Further, several residents had spent considerable sums on conveying water from .the reserve to their properties for bathing purposes. . ;
Several councillors spoke of the da'nger arising from the steam, interfering with visibility on the roadway, and predicted accidents if something were, not done. Further representations on the subject will be made to the Department.
