Referring in the House of Representa : tives to-day to the conditions of Maoris who are employed by Chinese market gardeners, the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata, said he did not think it would be possible to: legislate against Maori girls mating with Chinese. , ' . . ... .

The Minister said the Lands Department had in view a scheme which had his approval, and which would provide for better living conditions generally being provided. It was not proposed to make conditions restrictive to the Chinese.
