About.a dozen officers ,n the Northern Command are affecter' and-it is stated that they would be v. Iling to go overseas rather than w£it in uncertainty in New. Zealand. A message from Chrietchurch states that the staff officers there have , volunteered in a body. It will'be at least a mo: h, however, before any definite information can be oifered.
One military officer said to-day that' the liiipsrial Government's offer wae a .splendid one. It was an admission' of the value placed upon colonial officers, by the Home Government.. It was thought at Home, he said, that colonial officers are peculiarly suited for work in the outposts of the Empire, where they have.-often to act on their own initiativel Some of the posts are hundreds of miles from anywhere, and the officer in charge is more or:less supreme. It'w,ould be a. fine' opportunity for young officers, for the training received on out-stations was invaluable. On the other hand, New Zealand stood * very fair chance of losing some of her, most promising officers.
