NATIVE GIRL FORGED A
CHEQUE. PLACED ON PROBATION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREL Monday A native girl, aged 17, appeared in tho Magistrate's Court to-day on two charges, one of attempting t'o' obtain £5 . by means of false pretcnces by a cheque falsely purporting to be signed by Henry Babe, the other of stealing an eiectric torch valued at JO/, tho property of Mary Carroll. Accused ple-ided guilty to both charges arid elected *o be dealt with summarily.
Senior Sergeant O'Grady said the girl was employed by Mr. Babe, and was staying in the house. Before She went into the town one morning she tore out a cheque from Sir. Babe's book, signed it, and presented it at the bank. She was told it wa* not in order, and had better be takeirbaek to Mr. Babe. Later accused said that she had lost the cheque. The torch was taken while the owner was away.
To the magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, the accused said she could not explain why she committed the offerees.
The magistrate said he did not want to deal harshly and enter a conviction against a girl of her age, and lie adjourned the case for six months. "You will really be on probation," said the magistrate, "and if you behave yourself there will bo no more trouble."
