Bv an ingenious' device Sydney Walter Mitchener, signwriter. aged 26, has ecn defrauding the Copa. > for some time, but . lie was can lit in the end and put in an appearance at the Police Court this morning. ■_ Mitchener Avas charged ,with. stealing between February 13 ami August 13 a quantity of gas, about fce valued at 10/, the propertyocteAck land Gas Com pany. He pleadtd e u ty. Chief Detective. Hammond, who .pioeeeuted, produced the .apparntiis by means of which.accused was enabled to steal the gas.- In the fitting from the main to the meter accused had bored a small hole. Into this aWe pump connection could be screwed and the lead to a gas ring was fixed, to the end of the connection. When the inspector went round to read the meter accused disconnected his contraption :and tied a piece of tape over the hole. - The Gas Company could no. teJl exactly the amount of gas stolen, but estimated it at 15/ worth. The magistrate, Mr. F. h. Hunt, nilposed a fine of £5,. in default 14 da j s imprisonment. Accused was allowed i days in which to pay.
