THE LATEST QUOTATIONS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ' LONDON, July 1,

A further prosecution for the wrongful handling of New Zealand meat was recently, heard in a London police court. The Finsbury Borough Council, at the instigation, of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board in London, summoned Messrs. Rolbinson, Limited (pork butchers), for applying a false trade description, viz., "Canterbury," to meat exposed for sale by retail; having in their possession meat to which a false description was applied, and for exposing the same for sale, all contrary to sections of the Merchandise Marks Act. , < Mr. Ricketts, solicitor for the council, said that the meat in question was a leg of lamb. The word "Canterbury suggested that the meat came from New Zealand, where the besrfc of our imported lamib came from. This leg came from the Argentine, and was known as "River Plate" lamb. Mr. Penman, one of the council's meat inspectors, noticed that the meat in question, displayed for sale in the shop; of the defendants, had the word "Canterbury" ticketed on it, and lie saw with his practised eye that this was not of the nature' marked. Mr. Vine, for the . defendants, said that -the label was fixed on the wrong leg. The Magistrate: It had slipped. (Laughter.) . Mr. Ricketts, for the council, saad the letters "ARG" were marked on the leg itself in blue colour. It was 'a common trick of the trade to use the Canterbury label in this way. There was a difference of iy 2 d per lb in the price. The magistrate said he could give the offender four months, to which Mr. Ricketts replied that it was a company, and the anagietrate could fine them £20. MrPenman, the meat inspector, said he_ had never seen meat marked up- "Argentine. Cross-examined, he agreed that a general imported label hung in the shop covered the meat in question, and there would have been no complaint if the Canterbury label had not been used. The manager reproved the salesman in his presence. Mr. R. S. Forsyth, of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board, also gave evidence. For the defence it was stated that Argentine prices were ticketed on the wrongly labelled meat. The magistrate dealing with the case on the last summons j imposed a fine of £10 and 10 guineas costs.
