FLOODED MINE.
DEWATERING AT HIKURANGI.
INSTALLATION OF TWO PUMPS
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
VV HAN GAR EI, this day.
The latest development in dewatering the Hikurangi Coal Company's mine is that the management of Wilson's Collieries, a neighbouring mine, is co-opcr-ating by installing two pumps, one a six-inch and the other a seven-inch pump. This action becanic neccssary to guard against the possibility of subterranean waters from the "drowned" mine flooding into Wilson's mine.
When it is realised that the pumps will carry away 1200 gallons per minute and that when they arc working at full capacity they will he only sufficient to hold the water the extent to which the mine is flooded can be gauged. One of the new pumps arrived from Waihi and both are now being installed.
The pumps will continue working for approximately a month, by which time it is anticipated' the Government will have assisted in providing . machinery capable of completely dewatering the mine. At present the Hikiivansr' Coal Company has no plant engaged. Twenty men. are employed in installing the new machinery, but when this is operating the number will be reduced to twelve.
