BOWLING.

TROPHIES CHANGE HANDS. THREE TOURNAMENTS COMING BUSY SATURDAYS AHEAD. (By TRUNDLER.) The finest day of tho week favoured bowlers last Saturday, there being brilliant sunshine till long after the twentyfirst head was finished, making players very reluctant to leave the greens. The various grounds are looking very nice this year, and they will probably be still better in a few months, for most clubs are carefully following . the policy so strongly advocated by Messrs., W. M. Hortori and Norrio Bell, of Hamilton. A demonstration of the practical methods of carrying out this scheme will be given on tho Ellerslie green to-morrow afternoon by Mr. J. J. Toy, wlio'gives a cordial invitation to all club officials to attend.

AH the three sets of challenge trophies changed hands on Saturday, this being rather an unusual experience.

Tho Edwin Stars have left West End, after being there for nearly three months, Irving Clarke going down to his namesake of Carlton by seven points. Next Saturday's challengers will be N. Thomson, H. J. Scelly, A, Macpliereon, W. Cliiplin (Rawhiti), and they will be followed by W. Oughton, W. H. Tongue, W. A. Lorain, W. H. Keatley (Rocky Nook).

' St. Helicr's did not' hold the Jordan Pins more than a week. Defending them on their own ground, under the new , arrangement hy which the four clubs ' surrounding the Manukau electorate are 3 brought into the competition 011 equal terms, they went down to a challenge I from Mangere, the score being: Richards, Macaulay, Studd, Prangley 21, v. Clarke, Dayson, Thomson, Price IS. , As tho Mangere green is not open for ' play at present, the new holders will > defend tho trophies at Onchunga. The 1 next challengers are G. Angus, F. , Thursby, F. Moore, T. Pilkingtoii (To Papapa). The luck of the game is proverbial, but , the remarkable run of the score in two matches attracted considerable attention at Onehunga on Saturday. On ono rink r one side ran away with the score, and . secured 15 points before the others got I any, but the latter persevered, and . gradually pulled up until a three on the last head gave tliem a win by two points. Apparently a game of bowls i 8 not lost until it is won. On the other rink, one [ side got 30 before their opponents scored, which is possibly a record, but here there was no change in the position, as the ' lead was held until the end of the game. Tournaments Arranged. Hillsboro' will hold a rink tournament during the coming two Saturday after- ■ noons, August 30 and September 0. 1 " The latter date will open two other two-day tournaments, rinks at Dominion Road and Ellerslie. It seems rather a pity that three clubs should b© running a tournament on September 0, for the chances of all being filled do not appear very bright, whereas last Saturday there was a clear field for any club to get going. There is no rule preventing a dozen clubs from clashing in this way, but. in the interests of all concerned it would surely be better. to adopt during the winter the same procedure as iji the summer, and have them all sanctioned by the ccjitre' executive. If this had been done the needless clashing co.uld easily have boen avoided, and then players would not be worried to make up a list that is not full. The list is full for the pairs tournament at Ellerslie on Thursday The annual social of the St. Helier's Bowling Club will be held in the Peerless Hall 011 Tuesday of next week. This ball is always a very enjoyable function, and there should be a brilliant scene when the grand march takes place. Crossing the Great Divide. There will be general regret at the untimely death of Mr. J. M. Crosher, Ellerslie, for he was one who never "pushed his own barrow," being quite content to work quietly for his club and for bowling in general, without the general public being aware of the time and money lie spent. He was president of the Devonport Club as long ago as 'during '-the first years of the war, but actively, associated himself with the younger club when he removed to Ellerslie, where he was elected president for the 1925-20 season. The keen interest 'which he showed by donating trophies and giving general assistance was main* tained right up to tho end, for it is only a few weeks since lie completed the installation of the electric light in the club pavilion at his own expense. ELLERSLIE CLUB.
