HIGH DISDAIN.
PLEASES EPSOM BACKERS.
WHAT KOSEHILL SHOWED,
Before he ran at Rosehill on Saturday, August Hi (says the Sydney "Sun"), High Disdain was one of the equal favourites for tho A.J.C. Epsom, and although beaten by Roseal, his failure did not lose him any of his admirers for the rich Randwick sprint. The racc should benefit him considerably.
His race in the second division of the High-weight Handicap was High Disdain's first since the autumn, and it was lack of condition, combined with his steadier of 10.7, that pulled him up just when he appeared to have tho race won. Though he looked very bright, Higli Disdain was burly, and tho race should do a lot for him.
The Doncastcr runner-up has shown that he retains his dasli of the autumn, and even if the Epsom is beyond him, he should have no difficulty in paying his way during tho spring carnival.
Otlier Epsom candidates that shaped well on the same day were Killarney, Eaglet, Waugoola and the ever-green Don . Moon. The latter was just too solid for Eaglet at tho finish of the Flying Mile, in which he met the New Zealand mare on Epsom terms, but although Don Moon's many triumphs have included a Doncastcr and a Challenge) Stakes, it might be too much to expect him to land another rich stake in his ninth year.
Paquito's Form,
Paquito, who has ruled as favourite for the Metropolitan, also had an outing in the Flying Mile, and in finishing seventh ho did well enough to suggest the possibility of his returning to his form of last spring, when he ran third in the Metropolitan and second in the Melbourne Cup. His stable mate, Arikiwai, who is also in the Metropolitan, ran a promising race in the Rosehill Handicap, but Chide failed to show up in the Flying Mile. Chide, however, looked well, though above himself in condition, and tho race should sharpen him up for his nioro important engagements ahead.
Of the Metropolitan candidates that ran on Saturday, In the Shade was the greatest disappointment. Moving up to a fairly prominent position • about live furlongs Irom home in the Rosehill Handicap, lie lost ground between that stage and the straight entrance, only to run on again and finish fifth. It was a moderate performance, but as In the Shade is a good stayer, it would bo unwise to condemn him as a Metropolitan possibility.
