"HIGH FINANCING"

ONEHUNGA COUNCILLOR'S ■W

PROPOSAL.

OBTAINING STATE SUBSIDIES

How to obtain a large Government subsidy was discussed from various viewpoints last- night by the Onehunga Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. E. Morton., reported that the sum of £80 had been collected on Flag Day by the Onehunga Ex-Servicemen's Club and would be handed over to the council to obtain a Government subsidy of £2 for £1. The whole amount would be spent in finding work in the borough for unemployed ex-servicemen, who would be nominated by the club.

Mr. S. Telia asked if the council would first subsidise the £80 : with £1 for £1, making £160, and then apply to the Government for a subsidy of £2 for £1, making a total of £480. The suggestion was received with laughter, which appeared to surprise Mr. Vella, who said he considered they should get all thev could for the returned soldiers.

The Mayor thought, the suggestion was not feasible. The council could hardly give any money to get more from the Government.

The town clerk, Mr. H. A. Yockney, said the council could give the ExServicemen's Club £80, and the latter could apply to the Government for a subsidy of *£2 for £1. (Loud laughter.) Mr. *F. W. Mount joy supported Mr. Vclla's suggestion. Mr. G. A. McKendrick said that the proposal was too ridiculous for words. Mr.W.C.Hill said if the Government approved of the council's request New Zealand would be "ruined in one act."

Mr. J. Pilkington reminded the council that they would throw two or three permanent men out of work if they found much work for ex-servicemen.

It was finally decided to refer the question to the finance committee. The Mayor, remarked in closing the discussion, that they had listened to some high financing.
