MINING.

SCOTIA CREEK.

OWHAROA-WAITEKATJBJ.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

WAIHI, Friday,

Prospecting operations in the OwharoaWaitekauri district aTe showing signs of increased activity in the hope of making new discoveries. Mr. J. Bramble, of Waite•kauri, has located a lode in the vicinity of the Scotia Creek on his property, which is well worthy of further investigation. There is a good class of auriferous country in this part of the field, and ample evidence of the efforts of 'the earlier prospectors to locate ore bodies. One drive misled this lode by only a few feet, and runs a little off the parallel with it for about 100 ft. The lode would appear to be some 10 or 12ft wide, as far as can be judged by the work already done on it. / The well-known veteran prospector, Mr. W S. C. Nicholl, of Waitekauri, is y.till actively engaged in his search for the precious metal, and is looking wonderfully well. Mr. Nicholl, who has had adventures in the Klondyke, wrote a series of articles for the "Auckland Star," dealing with prospecting in the early days on the Thames field. . . At Owharoa, Mr. H. D. Bedford is sinking a prospecting shaft on his property in the dacite country which carries free gold. Hand-boring has also been carried out to some extent, and dish prospects sh#w a fair tail of gold. These operations are of much importance to the field generally and will be followed with great interest. ' . The Waihl Prospecting Association s nTea of 500 acres, as granted at the last sitting of the Warden's Court at Paeroa, runs from Mr. Bedford's northern boundary right through to Waitekauri in the same class of country. Quite apart from the alluvial proposition, many of the older prospectors are confident that an important reef remains to be opened up on this line of country.
