EDUCATION REPORT.

BUSINESSMEN'S CRITICISM.

BUILDING OF NEW SCHOOLS

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce is strongly opposed to the suggestion by the Parliamentary Recess Committe 011 Education that the work of maintenance and the building of schools should be placed in the hands of the Public Works Department.

At a meeting of the executive of the chamber held yesterday the education report was considered, and a resolution was passed as follows: —

"Wliilo not in a position to express an opinion on the highly technical question of whether educational efficiency will be better achieved by the abolition o'f present arrangements, and the substitution of unification of control of primary, secondary and techineal instruction, we consider that the nationalisation proposals will deprive the proposed new boards of many functions that in the past hav<> been, and in the future could be, handled more efficiently and economically from regional centres. In particular we are strongly opposed to the suggestion that the work of maintenance and building of schools should be placed in the hands of the Public Works Department."
