AUSTRALIA, IN WAR.
" Occupies Position of Grave
Danger."
MILITARY CHIEF'S VIEW.
SYDNEY, July 24.
In the course of -'a report to the Federal Government by General Sir Harry Chauvel coincident with .his retirement from the position of Chief of the General Military Staff, he says:' "Australia is the most isolated and sparselypopulated . portion of the Empire and therefore occupies a position of very great danger in time of war." Sir Harry says he considers a revision of Australia's defence policy urgent, and adds: "It is obvious that the provision of adequate naval forces is beyond the financial capacity of Australia, but she'is so dependent on sea defence that it is equally obvious that she should contribute what she can toward it, having in view her primary responsibility for providing necessary land and air forces for her local defences."
