NOTES FROM TAKANINI.

H. GOLDFINCH'S VICTORIES.

TOPSTAR DOING WELL.

H. Goldfinch's total of winning rides for the season is 50, and not 49, which is the general opinion. Before being injured Goldfinch had 46 wins to his credit, and since his return to the saddle has piloted four winners, viz., Bernera, King Wanga, Bold Archer and Arrowhead. He is now level with E. Keesing in fourth place. The Takanini mentor W. Goscomb returned home last Tuesday and St. Ames, Shine On and Little Gift were to leave yesterday. As it took the- boat a week to get to" Gisborne it is not exactly known when the horses will arrive. St. Ames ran a first-class race when he beat Rongo last Thursday, but the effort evidently told its tale, and the best he could do was to finish second on the concluding day, when, in a weak field of five, he beat all but Purseful. This was St. Ames' first victory over fences and his third , win this season.

P. Mcllroy piloted his first winner since returning to the game when St. Ames won at Gisborne, while ho also rode other placed horses at the Gisborne fixture. His turn of luck, however, did not last long, as when Tamworth fell he broke his collarbone. This may mean his missing the Pakurauga meeting. Topstar is making good headway. It will be remembered that the Sandstar youngster had his first and only outing as a two-year-old at Takapuna, when lie stumbled. after bumping another candidate in their preliminary, and his jockey, 0. Eastwood, received rather serious injuries. Ho looks really well and will be ready to show form in the early spring. Solanio and Dominican were companions in a six-furlong sprint on Wednesday morning, both shaping well, with the former doing the better of the pair at the finish. Solanio, who is by Lucullus, is a, hunter downed by Mr. G. Motion. He is being got ready for the Pakuranga meeting, where he will most likely be found contesting a hurdle event. He will be in nice condition for his engagement. Dominican, by Grey Monk, owned by Mr. Colin W. Anderson, will also be seen out next month. The grey gelding, has come on remarkably . well since being placed in work, and if he keeps on the improve should be carrying eilk in a creditable manner.

Inner Harbour, by Absurd, has been qualified, and in his class should acquit himself well. He is not a handsome horse, but he knows the way to gallopand lacks nothing on the score of condition. Mashoor is not being hurried, but will be on hand for his. Pakuranga engagements. He is looking well and has been pleasing in his work-outs. A great improvement has been shown in Refresher. The Tea Tray—Hula Girl gelding is almost his former self, and he promises to make himself. a source of annoyance to the sprinters in the new season.

Ti-tree's work has not been of a bustling nature, but she is becoming more solid and will grace the turf with renewed vigour after her lengthy spell. Kahalyira was left at Pukekohe after competing at the Wellington meeting, but is due back here at any time, when he will rejoin W. Goscomb's teani.

SOME PROMISING JUVENILES.

POLYXENA'S HALF.-BROTHER

■' The. three Leighton yearlings moved very nicely over a couple of furlongs at Takanini. on Wednesday morning,' running Tery straight and hitting out with plenty of freedom. They are the most forward yearlings here at the present time. , . Brazanna and Amber Link are another pair , making good headway. They look a very healthy pair, but may not have had sufficient time allotted them to be seen out in the early spring. The Chief Ruler—Spangle and Valkyrian—Podokes juveniles are hitting out nicely and will be among the most forward of J. T. Jamieson's team in the new season. The former looks to be the best proposition, while the latter, who is a half-brother to Polyxena, should prove useful. The Hunting Song —Potona colt has been doing all that is asked of him in a kindly manner, but gives the impression that, he may require a little time. Holimond's daughter, by Lucullus, was one of the first yearlings seen out, and although little fault can be found with her she does not appear as promising as the above-mentioned yearlings. C. Morse has a Gainscourt —Poldyia gelding, whd, for a yearling, is very bigboned. He has only recently been taken in hand and is not expected to be seen sporting silk until well in the new season. He is a half-brother to King Willonyx.
