TRENTHAM TOPICS.

HABIT DEVELOPS SORENESS.

NOW BEING SPELLED.

MOUNTAIN , GUIDE AND MANGANI FOR EICCARTON.

(By Telcgrapn.—Special to "Star.")

WELLINGTON, Thursday.

' Two successive hard frosts left the Trentham tracks very eticky for work this morning. The trial grass Avas open for horses going fast, and the majority with imminent engagements were galloped. H. B. Lorigan moved all his team along at a fast clip, Gesture's half-mile, in s'2As, being about the best of the morning. King Mueket ran seven furlongs in company with. Concentrate, moving along at a strong pace. King Musket is engaged in the Cashmere Plate on the first day of the Grand National meeting, and although he is to form one of the Sydney team leaving here that week, he will in all probability fulfil that particular engagement-at Riccarton. He can race and return on Tuesday, the Sydney boat leaving on the Friday. Diana's Lad -hae come back into work fully recovered from the injury he sustained while working on the Wanganui tracks last May. He ran seven furlongs in 1.38, and will make his next appearance on the second day of the Manawatu meeting. He will then go down to Riccarton for the National meeting. Diana's Lad showed a lot of promise when he made a start as a steeplechaser this season by running second in both his Hawera engagements last May, beinpf runner-up on the eecond occasion to Aurora Borealis when in receipt of only 41b.

The Thespian filly Habit survived the first payment for the Winter Cup, but ehe will not be a runner. She hae lately been more or less sore, and this week it was decided to give her a spell. She was sent up to her owner's farm in the Rangitikei on Wednesday. The Hunting Song three-year-old, Hunting Call was noticed striding along very boldly in hie sprinting task, being very anxious to increase the pace, despite the fact that he was carrying a good lump of weight. It is clear that he has done well since his win on the laet day of the winter meeting. E. Murtagh's Team. Rational 11. and Arikinui took advantage of the better going down the back by running the five furlongs from the mile post to the - three. They kept together all the way in nice work, taking 1.10 for the distance, the last half being run in 555. Kilmezzo and Raeouli' ran the f our furlongs from the seven to the three in 53|s, both going nicely. E. J. Murtagh will leave for Riccarton with Rational 11., Arikinui and Rasouli on Wednesday next, the early departure for the National, meeting being due to the heavy tracks at present prevailing at Trentham, the heavy.frosts experienced giving them no chance to recover. All three horses need a;bit of strong work, a3 they had only one race each at Trentham after several weeks' absence from racing. In the case of Rasouli it was several months.

Staghunter and Duellona ran six furlonge, from the mile post to the twofurlong post. They kept together all the way, and registered 54s for the first half-mile, five furlongs being covered in 1.75, and the sis in 1.22. Both went nicely. * E. C. Rao will arrive from Ellerslie in tho morning and take charge of Mountain Guide, who was left at Trenham after the meeting in the cure of J. Sharkey. They go on. to Riccartou to-morrow night. It will be remembered that Mountain Guide fell heavily at the last fence on the second day of the Wellington meeting, and lay so still that it looked as if he'had broken his neck. He showed a pair of damaged knees as the result of the mishap. The near one has the skin broken and has healed nicely, but the off knee is still very puffy, although he has had cold water treatment in the Hutt River for hours. However, it does not appear to affect him, and ho has worked all along, and he will start at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. A blister when he has finished racing at Riccarton should put matters right with him orice more. ' Mangani is another remaining visitor, who will leave for Riccarton ■ to-morrow evening. This morning he-did t strong pace work. Mangani is engaged in the Longbeach' Hurdles at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, but he is unlikely to run. • Historic, who will not be seen out until the last day at Riccarton, sprinted twice down tlie back, moving ,along freely. ; • • .'. . Hynanna and Pat's Boy, over the same ground, ran half a mile together in 555, Black Mint and Royal, Game doing the same. Black Mint went on a g,ood deal further, and worked nicely. Tourist ran one of the best gallops, of the morning from the mile post lo the three-furlong post, taking 1.7, the last half in 52Js. He went very boldly, and was still pulling hard some distance past the post. Tourist comprises one of J. McLaughlin's trio in the Winter Cup. He has improved a lot lately, and must be given a chance in the big mile race. At Otaki last month he spreadeagled a fair field after leading all the way. The Trentham trainer who is building new stables at Otaki is not A. E. Browne, but H. Brown, who has Limosin and the two young horses bought at the John Brown Estate sale in Sydney under his care. Limosin, by the way, is going along nicely in his preparation and should make a bold bid for some money at Riccarton.

Matu, who looks well, "was given a couple of rounds of pace -work under a light weight, the. second round being fairly solid. . * Three of the rising two-year-olds trained by J. T. Jamieson have now been registered. The ( chestnut sister to Eaglet (Cliief Kuler—Dovelet) lias been named Columba, the brown geldmg by Chief Euler—Spangle is called. Chief Jewel, and the chestnut gelding by Tea Tray—Philomela will be known as Tea Chat. ~ ~.. T Green will ride Dnellona at tne Manawatu Kacing Club's winter meetiii",. ■ The cising two-year-old three-quarter brother-to Commendation, by Pombal from Eulogy, will race under the name of Esteem. The name of The. Mirror has been registered for the rising two-year-old bay gelding''by Shadowland— Nellie's Choice in G. W. New's stable. ;It transpired that R. Reed, who was due to leave for Sydney to-morrow with A. .McAulay, for whom he 8 will ride,.:jrofc away at the last minute on the Maunganui last Friday. It would be no surprise if Ec-cd settled permanently iu Sydney.
