GAME BIRDS.

AUCKLAND CLUB'S SHOW. RECORD EXHIBITION AT NEWMARKET. ■' NEW VARIETIES.

A record entry of over 300 had been received for the fourth annual show promoted by the Auckland Game Fowl Club, which was opened to-day in the Municipal Hall, Newmarket. Birds came from as far afield as Christchurch, and in the opinion of the judges (Messrs. E. J. E. McLaren and W. Wilson), the exhibits were of a general quality that has never been approached at any local show. i ■■'• '

The birds ranged from tiny bantams, weighing less than 15 ounces, to cocks of the modern game variety up to 81b in weight. Of particularly high quality are the large old English varieties, the black red classes, and the duckwings. Theee latter, by the way, are birds of the type used for so many years in the Old Country for cock-fighting—magnifi-cently plumaged and of bold and gamelike appearance. A novelty this year is an ohjl English "crele" bantam, shown by Stone Bros., of Nelson. It is of barred black and white plumage, somewhat similar to that of the Plymouth Eock fowl.

The large classes were judged by Mr. McLaren, and the bantams by Mr. Wilson. The show will remain open until to-morrow evening.
