Opinion in Auckland is that the new taxation proposals of the Government will have a bad effect on business and commerce. In mercantile circles it is considered the Government has not sufficiently applied the pruning knife to the various Departments.

The increased income tax has puzzled the man in the street, but the additional 1 0 per cent is not so formidable as it sounded to ears not familiar with figures. It means that only the amount a taxpayer customarily pays will be increased by 10 per cent; for instance, instead of paying £2 he will pay £2 A/.

Stock Exchange opinion is that the result of the increased tjaxes on transfers will make New South Wales stock, at least, unpopular, but it is considered there will be a difficulty in collecting the additional tax.

Picture exhibitors in Auckland. , feel that they have been overburdened with taxation, and that the tax on the lower-priced tickets is a direct impost on workers.
