CHINESE WAR'S AFTERMATH.
COASTAL TOWNS DEPRESSED. Mr. Wakeford Cox, who left Wellington 30 years ago to manage an insurance office in Shanghai, arrived by tlia Niagara yesterday en route for England. -He is breaking his journey here to spend some time -with relatives at Onehunga, During his 30 years' residence in China Mr. Cox has . had many interesting experiences. Conditions, he said, remained very unsettled in the Celestial Empire. There had been far too much war and all the coastal towns had felt the strain and the drain. The Chinese National Government had been facing strenuous times owing to the warring factions that were trying to gain power. '•Shanghai," he said, "is perfectly safe, however, and I am returning there when my holiday is over."
