REMOVING A MAGNETO.
TWO YOUNG MEN CAUGHT. FIXE IMPOSED OX OXE. Thomas Dennis, a mechanic, aged 27, and Henry .Robert Falls, engineer, aged 21, appeared' before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in tiie Police Court this morning, charged with attempting to steal at Waitakcre on July 0, a magneto valued at £(>, the property of Samuel P. Frost.
Mr. Aickea pleaded guilty for Dennis and Mr. Alan Moody admitted,the facts of the ease for Falls. Chief Detective Hammond said that .Dennis was a lnanied mail and he borrowed a car from a woman. He and Falls took two young women for a drive to the Waitakeres and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Mr. Frost, the owner of the truck, which was on the roadside about 100 yards from his house, found the two men with tools trying to remove the magneto. They had several nuts and bolts off. One small fitting worth 17/G had been removed and £1 worth of damage done. Dennis had a list of previous ofi'euces, including two years' reformative treatment for forgery in 1920.
Mr. Aicken said Dennis was told that the truck was an abandoned one. He had nothing to hide and had given the number of his car to Mr. Frost. He had not been in trouble recently. Mr. Moody said that Dennis had told Falls about the. abandoned car. He thought that Falls had got into the company of a more experienced man and had made a fool of himself. He had a clear record and Mr. Moody asked that lie be saved a conviction.
Dennis was fined £10 or one month's imprisonment, and given seven days in which to" pay. Falls' case was adjourned for six months, and both were ordered to make restitution of IS/u".
