PITIFUL STORY.
Thursday Islanders Succoured By Jap. Steamer. DESPERATE PLIGHT. (Received 10.30 a.m.) BRISBANE, this day. ! Officers of the Japanese steamer Tanc) | Hani reported that when the vessel was two days out from Thursday Island a native fishing boat was sighted dying distress signals. The steamer hove to and it was found that the nine Malays on board were starving. The natives told a pitiful story. Their boat had been becalmed for a long period at Bird Island, and when the position became desperate the majority of the j crew, numbering 40. were left ashore 'and the remainder set out to obtain assistance. The famished men were supplied with medicine, food and water.
