CARJNTHIA'S HURDLES. WINTER OATS TO TABOO. MATU HOME IN STEEPLECHASE ONLY LAST TWO FAVOURITES SCORE. GRAY LEADS BY FOUR IN PREMIERSHIP. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting was brought to a close to-day at Trentham. The chief event of the afternoon, the Winter Hurdles, was won by Carinthia, at one time trained hy N. Cunningham at Ellerslie. King's Jest, the favourite, finished third. The heavy track suited Taboo, who scored in the Winter Oats, -while the July Steeples went to llatu. H. Gray was in great form and piloted three winners, which makes him the leading horseman for the season, with 72 victories to 68 scored by A. E. Ellis, who piloted only one winner at this meeting. The attendance was large, and the totalizator handled £59,710, an increase of £ISS9 over the total for the third day last year, which was wet. The total for the meeting was £140,755, compared ■with £144,291 last year. Many Spills for Chief Event. Ten paraded for the Winter Hurdles. King's Jest (£1805), Mister Gamp (£1461) and Carmthia (£S08) found most support, Omeo being next' in demand. Taumai and Omeo were slow to begin. King's Jest showed the way over the first fence, followed by Amorist and Aurora Borealis. Mangani lost hie rider at the obstacle. As they crossed the top Amorist was in front, and was followed bv King's Jest, Taumai, Aurora Borealis, Fine Acre, Beaumont . awl Carinthia. Coming into the straight, Amorist fell, and Taumai led past the stands from Kind's Jest, Beaumont and Gmeo. Entering "the back stretch Taucani had Beaumont as his nearest attendant, then came Carrathia, King's Jest and Omeo. Crossing the top, Fine Acre was in charge, with Taumai in close attendance, and then came Carinthia, King's Jest, Omeo and Aurora Borealis. Entering the straight, Fine Acre was showing the way to Carinthia, with King's Jest and Omeo close up, and Taumai making a forward move. Taumai tripped over the last fence and interfered with King's Jest as he fell. In the run home Carinthia headed Fine Acre, and went on to win by a length and a half from Fine Acre, with King's Jest, six lengths away. Omeo was fourth, and there was a big gap to Aurora Borealis, with Beaumont' and Panorama next. Mister Gaißp fell five furlongs from home.

Another Surprise. Prince of Oranga and Brilliant Light were scratched for the Winter Oate. Mendip (fISI3) was a hot favourite, with Paddon (5944) - and Black Duke (£900) next fancied, while Taboo was at double figures. Balloon, and High Pitch were slow to begin.. Blimp was first oat, followed by Habit, Mendip, Air Laddie, Eanelagh and Paddon. Crossing the top Blimp 'led from Air Laddie, Taboo, Best Priend, High Pitch, and Eanelagk. As they entered the straight Blimp was still in front from Padddo, with Maui 3 Beet I'riend, Taboo and High Pitch next. In th& ran home Taboo took charge, although Town Major came with a rattle to fight out a close finish, victory going to Taboo by half a head froo Town Major, *he latter beating Llyn "Ohu by two and a half lengths. Kanelagh, Mani, Mar joram and Rascal followed. Matu at List. , The ten acceptors all lined ap for the July Staples. Badiate (£1372) was made * better favourite than Master Lu (£1332), with Matu (£737) next fancied. Son o . Mine led to the first fence, but baulked and lost his rider, and interfered with Sir Moment, who also lost Ms rider. Master Lu led past the stands from Odin, with Nukumai, Eadiate, -Brigadier Bill and Airtight next in order. Master Lu was weH out entering the baek straight, but he dropped back, Eadiate being in front, as they crossed the top. Going past the stands the aecond time Odin led from Brigadier Bill, *sd then came. Eadiate, Master Lu and Knkumai. Going out of the straight Nckumai took charge, but Eadiate jumped to the front again at the mile post, with Master Lu, Brigadier Bill, Matu and Jen next in order. As they ■ crossed the top Nukumai, Kadia,te, Master Lu, Matu and Airtight were n:inBiig as named, but Eadiate and Master Iα fell, Matu leading into the straight from Jen, -with Xukumai, Brigadier Hill ind Airtight following. In the run lame Matu went on to win by five lengths from Jen, who beat Brigadier •Bill by 15 lengths. Then came Airtight *nd Xukumai. A Favourite "Wins, Taboo and Limdsin were withdrawn worn the Onslow Handicap, seven going to the post. Havering (£2462), Hopwood (3928) and Prince of Orange (£1675) Were best backed. Marble King was •«rst to show out from Goblin Market, Havering, Prince of Orange and •ttopwood next in order. Aa they reached toe course proper Goblin Market was leading f rom Marble King, with Hop■»ocd, Havering and Prince of Orange Beit. Half-way down the running of Orange and Hopwood were together in front, but Havering came *uh a splendid run and—well handled *y H- Gray— got up to win by * neck «om Priticg o f Orange, who beat Hopwood Iγ half a length. Marble King *as two lengths further back fourth, Jtta Goblin Market, Kiosk and Eoyal ' Opera almost in line. Conclnding Event, Gowanlea was scratched for the Kia Handicap, thirteen gotog to the Jce<- Hunting Call ( £2722) was made * good favourite. Coon Song (£2192) ■"as next in demand, and Crash was also backed.. Crash, Portray, Abbey wen. and Blue Paper were the early «aaers, the first to reach the course Proper being Blue Paper, Hunting Call, vJifiit and Coon Song.
