MOSSTROOPER'S DOUBLE. HURDLES AND STEEPLECHASE. MELBOURNE, July 23. The Flemington- Grand National meeting was concluded yesterday in doll, wet weather. The course was heavy. The following are the results of the chief events: — GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE, of aOOQsovs. About three miles and one furlong. MOSSTROOPER, eh g, aged, by Kenil—erth—Keego (Mr. G. Powell), 11.10 —Harri3 ..' 1 NAMERA, ch g. aged, by Nareisse— Binniaiera {Mr. N. Turnbull), 10.13 — Infcain 2 GLENTRONIE, br g, aged, by Governor Bligh—Kathburn, (Messrs. Pegler and Son), S.l3 —Howson 3
Fourteen started, including five former Grand National winners. Nightlarlc made the early pace from Good Whiskey. Ken tie, Sandhurst, Mosstrooper and Glentonle. The field was much reduced after going a mile. Ken tie, Nightlark and Adit fell at intervals, Mauraki baulked and stopped, and Woomera ran off. Sandhurst went to the front nine furlongs from home, closely attended by Mosstrooper, Glentronie, Namera and Good -Whiskey, while Orange Park was the only other one in the picture. Approaching the straight Mosstrooper' had five lengths* lead from Sandhurst, and, finishing full of running, won easily by six lengths from N*mera. with about four lengths separating second and third. Then came Sandhurst, with Orange Park a long I way back. Hungarian and Maxownit were i no: sighted. Time, 6.25 J. Only two horses have ever won the Grand National Hurdles and Steeples in one year. Mosstrooper being the second to do so. He received a wonderful ovation. Mosstrooper also previously won the Australian Grand National Hurdles and Steeples. The only other horse to wia the jumping double in one season was Red Leap. DOUTTAGALLA HURDLE RACE. BAY OF BISCAY, lO.u—Thompson .. 1 AFFIRM, 10.10—Turner 2 LORD DARNLEY, 9.7—Wraight 3 Ten started. Won by a length, with six lengths between second and third. Time, 4.30 i. BOSEHIIX MEETING. GREE.V MANTLE'S DEAD HEAT. SXDNEE, July 13. Several Now Zealand horses ran at the Rosen ill raee-= yesterday, but only Green Mantle was successful. Tlit Maiden Handicap resulted:— BLUDALE. 7.12 « GREEN MANTLE, 7,$ . '.'."• LADY DORIS, 7.10 3
Twelve started. Lady Doris was a length-and a-half behind the dead-heaters Time, 1.25. * Dead-heat first.
