DEAD HEAT.
POLL AT NEWMARKET. STATION STREET PROPOSAL. UNPRECEDENTED POSITION. SPECIAL MEETING CALLED. A perplexing situation lias arisen in connection with the poll held at New-
market on Thursday to borrow £29,000 for the acquisition of land to widen Station Street.
On the first count there was a majority of eight votes against the proposal, Avith twelve declaratory votes to be counted. Yesterday, when the official count was completed, the majority had decreased to three. The declaratory votes were counted this morning, the result being a tie, and the figures:— For the proposal 198 Against the proposal .... 198 Informal S The town clerk (Mr. H. Wilson) stated this morning that, as a majority was legally necessary to carry the proposal, the Station Street scheme was negatived, but a special circumstance had arisen. The question of building at the corner of Station Street was involved, and the Newmarket Borough Council had decided to hold a special meeting to consider the position. It was for the council to decide whether another poll was necessary. Coincident with the Station Street proposal, a poll was taken on the question of raising £4500 to acquire properties at the corner of Gillies Avenue and Crowhurst Street to straighten a bend in the road.
