ASSUMED NAMES BARRED.
RACING CONFERENCE DECISION
PROPOSAL TO RESTORE,
(By to "Star.") ■ «WELLINGTON, Thursday. For some time past assumed names have been barred by the New Zealand Earing Conference, but the Canterbury Jockey Club endeavoured to reintroduce them with a remit at the New Zealand Racing Conference to-day. Mr. H. A. Knight, in proposing the remit, said that he knew men who ■would be glad to race horses, but they' would not race them in their own names. Not being able to race horses under an assumed: name they knew there ■ were people who were racing horses under other people's names. ,ln Australia assumed Dames were allowed. Mr. J. H. Perrett said that their late president,' Sir George Clifford, very, strongly objected to assumed,, names. There was-no great demand for it, and he, the speaker, had always opposed the practice.- There were men occupying a position, of trust to whom it would be an advantage, for they were in business for others. If anyone wanted to race let them do so under their own names. Would Mr. Knight like the successes of ™s horse l Limerick to be credited to an assumed name ? In England assumed aames had been abolished for a very sound reason, and he considered it would |>e a. retrograde step to reintroduce them in New Zealand. Everything, should be ln the', open, for the conference had enough to do to maintain the sport at a high level. .Mr. W. T. Hazlett said tha* he had ,een asked by people in important positions m New Zealand to vote for the Proposal. He knew people who would « c e horses to-ihorfow if this were Passed.- They were in a position of wnst, doctors, solicitors, and others, and " e y might eventually have a "wowser" , ent - _ He knew of people who raced or ses in other people's names, but he jouid not inform the conference, jssumed names would do away with
h 3* r - H - A. Russell thought assumed wues were likely to lessen nefarious Practices than increase 'them. • Air. G. N. McLean said he knew two j. lto . rs and one doctor who would race jes if the proposal was carried. k \ Ue noting was 28 in favour and. 14 gamst,; but as a three-fourths majority as required the remit was lost.
