She will later travel to Auckland for a visit. * » # ® Mrs. Algar Williams has "been appointed to represent the Canterbury branch of the Navy League at the annual conference to be held at Dunedin in the last week in July. * » • * Mrs. Raysmith (Australia), who is staying with Mrs. Gray Colbeck, Fendalton, Ohristchurch, has left for Auckland. She will return to Christchurch next month and will be the guest of Mrs. Guy Cotterill, Merivale, for Grand National Week. * * • • Miss Edith Lyttclton ("G. B. Lancaster," the New Zealand novelist), who was in Auckland recently and who left the Dominion some months ago to visit the East, has now arrived in England. She expects to be there for some months and will then go abroad again. SOCIAL GATHERINGS. An illustrated lecture entitled "A Travel Talk on Parts of Australia" was given by Miss Tremaine at the Presbyterian Church, Northcote, on Thursday evening. The Rev. Thompson was the operator, and the talk was much appreciated. Supper and a social hour followed the lecture.

The Kumeu branch of the W.C.T.U. held a "bring and buy" sale in the Kumeu Public Hall on Wednesday afternoon to raise funds for the Francis Willard Home, for orphans. The sale met with a ready response from the ladies of the district, and a sum of over £7 was raised. Afternoon tea was in the hands of Mrs. R. Barnes and Mrs. R. Martin, while the stalls were in charge of Mrs. R. Cates and Mrs fc A. Stuart. • • • • The members of the Northcote Presbyterian Social Club gave a surprise party to Miss Tremaine on Tuesday evening. They arrived in fancy dress and masked and a merry time was soon in progress. Games and singing were enjoyed. Those present included: Sirs. Nicholson, Misses G. Broady, J. Blott, L. Blott, N. Blott, Joyce Thompson, E. Morrison, H. Milligan, M. Munroe, R. Gray, J. Clarke, R. Broady, H. Mackinnon, H. Osborne, D. Smith, and J. Brown. * * « « The monthly meeting of the Mount Albert branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday in the Presbyterian Hall, and was a social afternoon, members of various women's organisations in the district being invited. Miss Lillian Edger, M.A., gave an interesting address on "Peace." A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Sir Joseph Ward was passed. Musical items were given by Mesdames Mcßean and Bollard, and Misses James and Fyfe. Afternoon tea was served by the members. The Western Area Ratepayers and Residents' Association held a meeting at the residence of its president, Mrs. J. Blomfield, on Wednesday afternoon. Apologies for absence were received by letter from Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Maxwell, the secretary. A letter suggesting the co-operation of the association with the Municipal Band in organising a fair was discussed, a favourable decision on certain terms being decided on. Plans for further improvements to be effected by the Beautifying Society approved, also ways and means of mitigating such public nuisances as stables on the main road.

The Hobsonville Progressive Club held a successful dance in the Public Hall on Saturday evening. Two Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Miss M. Sinton and Petty Officer Boldero, of H.M.s. Wakakura, and Miss M. Findlay and Mr. R. Boyd. Mr. Rushen, of Auckland, gave some items. Among those present were: —Mesdames Sorrel, Swenson, Smith, W. McMillan, Abraham, W. Sinton, 0. Smith, S. Holliday, F. Wright, Misses M. Clark, M. Hammonds, M. Bridgford, E. Herd, Jensen (2), N. Hoist, N. Hill, Taylor, Thomas (3), Perkins, M. Findlay, E. Jones, A. The Northcote Women's Progressive League held their monthly meeting in tho ' 'arish Hall on Thursday afternoon. The president, Mrs. O'Leary, was in the chair, and an address by the Eev. W. G. Monckton on the children of the world was listened to with great interest. Mrs. Swinbank gave a report of the National Council. It was announced that the proceeds of Miss Gunman's concert was £10, and this sum is being divided equally between the dental clinic and tho league funds. It was also announced that a considerable amount of clothing from the recent commercial travellers' drive was available for distribution in Northcote. Anyone knowing of deserving cases is asked to communi° cate with the secretary or members of • the league.

Mr. and Mrs. F. Leslie,. of Mangere Road, Otahuhu, gave an evening at their home recently for the Rover Scouts. Fourteen card tables were occupied by the older guests, while amusements in other parts of the house were enjoyed by the scouts. Mrs. Leslie received in black satin beaute. The ladies' card competition was won by Mrs. Woods, while Mrs. Lovell was second. Mr. Sheldon won the gentleman's prize, and Mr. Hume was second.

A morning reception of overseas Red Cross delegates was held by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace on May 21. About 50 delegates were present, and the following countries were represented:—Canada, India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Malay States, Northern Rhodesia, Cyprus, Basutoland, Bahamas, Seychelles, Tanganyika, Windward Islands, West Africa and Ceylon. The New Zealand delegates presented to Her Majesty were Mr. Bernard Tripp, C.8.E., the Rev. Bryan King, C.8.E., Miss Janet Murray, M.8.E., of Auckland, Miss Sybil Nathan, M.8.E., Miss Wilson and Dr. Beaumont. « * » # A bridge party in honour of Miss Linley Le Quesne, whose marriage takes place shortly, was given by Miss Maida Macindoe at her home, New North Road, last evening. The hostess received her guests wearing a frock of deep cream georgette with black bridge coat, and the guest of honour was in red figured chiffon with red coatee to tone. Among the players.. were:—Mesdames J. Stevenson, F. E. Marler and Alan Eainger; and Misses Doreen Simson, Inez Gillies, Linda de Renzy, Madeline Gorton, Molly Bailey, Joyce Colwill, Patsy Simson, Phyllis Gash, Wilmcr Plummer, Freda Gaudin, Helen Seabrook, Beechy Hardie-Neil, Evelyn Ford, Noel Self, Joan Macindoe, Gladys Gash, Gretta Heron, Betty Colwill and Jessie Gillies.

A social and dance was. held in the Alfriston Public Hall recently in aid of the Catholic Church funds,- the; attendance including a large number of visitors from Manurewa and surorunding districts. Music was played by Miss Lillis and Mr. McKay, whilst items were contributed by the following: Elocution, Miss Rona Speed; violin solos, Mr. McKay; songs, Father Duffy. The accompanist was Madam Aileeu Frost. Those present included: Mesdames A.; white rayon silk; H. Kimpto'n, fawn georgette and mauve overdress; J. Muir, gold lace over orange; J. Noon, wine crepe de chine; Jeffs, mauve embossed velvet; H. Peterken, apricot satin with georgette; Poland, apple green embossed velvet; Misses Millie Claris, red crepe de chine with gold lace; Ina Coppins, grass green crepe de chine with red; M. Laverty, shell pink georgette; K. Lowe, lemon georgette; Hilda Whalen, pale green frilled crepe de chine and gold; Rona Speed, salmon pink spun silk; C. K. Harris, amber georgette; G. Maxwell, Nile green georgette and lace; H. Maxwell, beige lace and georgette; Queen- Kimber, ivory satin embossed; J. Harris, peacock blue;. C. The pupils ot Mr. James Hutton were entertained at Sly's studios on Saturday evening. Songs and pianoforte solos were rendered and competitions were held, the prizes being won by Misses M. Fordyce, Beatrice Eyre, and Messrs. Gladwyn Neville and D. Campbell. A dainty tea was served. Among those present were: Misses Mary Laurence,' Mollie Tyler, Winnie Hockin, M. Fordyce, Eileen Laurence, Aroha Peacock, Margaret Douglas, Bernice Eyre, Patty Field, May Peacock, Nan McCrone, Beatrice Thomas, Mary Douglas, Kathleen Henry, Elsie Gaily, Beatrice Eyre.

A meeting of the Birkenhead Women's Association was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday evening, when the Mayoress, Mrs."McPhail, presided. Many new members were enrolled. Mrs. Usher, of Birkdale, gave a demonstration of cake icing, which was followed with great interest. Musical items were given by Mesdames Davenport and Grill, Misses Havill and H. Taylor, the accompanists being Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Gill. The sub-committee for relief, the members of which arc now on the executive of the general relief committee of the district, reported on the distribution of funds, and particularly, with regard to clothing received from the commercial travellers' drive. A committee was elected to make arangements for a bridge evening, the proceeds to be divided between the association and the district relief committee.

A party representing the v 'Ever Ready" Committee of the Victoria League, under the leadership of Mrs. J. B. MacFarlane, visited the Sunshine School this week. They saw the children at work, inspected the solarium and rest rooms, and expressed great admiration for the work. They took with them a lavish supply of apples, oranges, mandarins and grapes, and before leaving they personally presented each child with a gift of fruit. They were shown over the whole building and saw the rooms used by the Community Club children at night. At morning tea Mrs. Miller expressed disappointment that the president was unable to be there owing to ill-health. The following were present:—Mrs. J. B. MacFarlane, Mrs. Carr-Smith, Mrs. Cerutty, Mrs. Angwin, Mrs. Charlton, Miss Shutes and Miss Seiderberg. * * * *

A 500 evening was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leslie, Otahuhu, on July 5, to raise funds for the Rover Club (senior Boy Scouts). Mrs. Leslie received in black satin beaute, with embroidered shawl to tone. Among those present were:—Mesdames T. Cle° ments, N. Walters, Gillies, Frank Leslie, Morrin, K. Ashcroft, Fellows, Gibbs, G. Sheldon, Venables, Rugg, Parsons, Pinkey, Patton, "Woods, Handford, Evans, Harris, Pollard, Jameson, Mouton, West, Mathews, Lovell, Hubbard, Hume, Elliot, Moore, Hickson, Pearse, R. Todd, T. Day. Mrs. W. G. Woods won the ladies' prize, Mrs. H. Lovell second; Mr. G. Sheldon the gentlemen's, Mr. Hume second. Young folks dancing included Misses Ivy Leslie, Joyce Ashcrof t, Nancy Fearnley, Daphne Taylor, Peggy Jaques, Dorothv Blake, Marion Stehr, Essie Goodwin, Helen Kildaire, Dorothy Worthington and Lilias Emery.
