CRUISER LIMITS.
EMPIRE DEFENCE. 50 Accepted as Meeting Peace Requirements. GOVERNMENT EXPLAINS. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 0.30 am.) LONDON, July 10. Explaining the naval construction programme announced by Mr. A. V. Alexander the Government has made a further statement. It points out that it has accepted 50 cruisers as meeting the peace requirements of all members of the British Commonwealth. . This renders possible, after provision of fleet and training establishments, the disposition of 22 for service abroad, of ■which four belong to the Royal Australian Navy, two are maintained by New Zealand, and the number remaining provides only the hare margin necessitated by large refits and for the provision of reliefs. It will be necessary in order to secure steady replacement, to spread the building of 27 cruisers over a period from 1930 to 1936, giving at least three or four yearly. Three will be included in the programme for 1930.
