Sudden Death of Bishop Long Of Newcastle. ILLNESS AT LAMBETH. (ReceiA-ed 10 a.m.) LONDON, July 9. The death has occurred of Bishop Long of Newcastle. He became ill last night after attending the Lambeth Conference and died in hospital from cerebral hemorrhage. A Sydney message states that Dr. Long was one of the foremost men in Australian church life. He Avas made a Commander of the British Empire in 1919.
Rt. Rev. G. M. Long, D.D., LL.D., C.8.E., Avas born and educated in Victoria. Ordained in 1899, he was headmaster of the Grammar School, KeAv, at the age of 29, and became later Canon of St. Paul's, Melbourne. He was in .1911 elected Bishop of Bathurst. He was created a C.B.E. in 1919. He served as Director of Education to the A.I.F. in England during the Avar, and Avas given the rank of Brigadier-General.
