Mr. McMurray '.was'.•' born in County. Antrim, Ireland, .As-a ' young 1 .man lie. was employed /by the firm .of • "Ten nant," in Glasgow, where ho' married. Shortly after, at;the age. of. 24, he left with his wife for New Zealand, in the ship Viola j which arrived at Auckland on April ,7, 1865. Ho and his wife then went up the Clevedon River -in a - sailing ship, and camped for some time. al} Clevedon, ultimately taking up a land grant in Papakura. During early years Sir. McMurray worked on the. roads , for\ ■ 2/6 per day to help things along. He developed his farm into a productive state, and lived, there until he retired IS years ago, ; to live in Onslow Road, Papakura. An enthusiastic Orangeman, he was one of the original trustees of the Papakura Orange Hall. He was also a member of the Road Board ?nd. School Committee, and a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church- His wife died 24 years ago, and he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. M. Hutchinson, of«Papakura, and Mrs. M. J. Bates, of- Hastings.

MR. A. W. SMITH..

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. '■ The death has occurred of Alfred William Smith, aged 74, who was a prominent figure in the motor business here some years ago.

MISS A. M. ARE^

A former .teacher under the Auckli ml Education Board, Miss Alice Mildied Arey, died on July 9. Miss Arey joined the teaching profession in 1891, and was for 15 years in charge of the infant department at Napier Street; School. When she retired in 1926 she took up social work, and was provincial secretary of the Auckland Mothers' League, also assistant secretary of the Haeremai Club. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Arey.

MR. ALEXANDER JOHNSTON.

Mr. Alexander Johnston, who was killed at the Argyle Street level cross, ing on the night' of July 7, lived for many years in Devonport in an elevated house known as "The Mount" on Mount Victoria. He was an exceptionally good business man, and was often asked to preside at public meetings in the borough, because of his keen interest in civic affairs. For a long period he was one of the most enthusiastic bowlers in Devonport, and as a ' skip" he had few equals at the game. He was a typical Scot, a man of sound judgment, whose opinion was often sought by those who needed advice on business matters.

(By Telegrapli.—Press Association.) CHKISTCHURCH, this day. The death i.-= reported from Pari? of Mr. Alfred William Page, M.A., aged 31. formerly a master of the Boys' Hi?h School. He was well known for his brilliant scholastic and scientific achievements and was the organiser of the "no more war" movement in New Zealand.

MR. JOHN McCARROIL.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, this day. Mr. John McCarroll has died at tli3 age of 8o years. He was a pioneer an:l prominent local body member for many years in North Auckland. He came to the Dominion from Belfast 44 years apo. Mr. McCarroll is survived bv seven sons and two daughters. He had been residing- here with a son for a. year. The interment will take place at Paparoa.
