ONEHUNGA SWIMMING BATHS.
COUNCIL EVENLY jrVIDED. EARLIER DECISION - STANDS. The Onehunga Borough Council decided last night, not to reverse its decision to allocate £800 for the erection of swimming baths. Mr. S. Vella, who moved that an earlier decision be rescinded, said he thought it was a mistake to incur the expenditure without a poll of the ratepayers. Mr. F. W. Mountjoy seconded, urging that it was far more urgent to provide for a new chlorination plant, especially when £800 would not be sufficient to build the baths. Mr. T. E. Geraghty put m. a plea for better roads, which, he said, were more essential than baths, and Mr. A*. C. Tonkin also thought more should be spent on the streets. He would support the motion if it included a street loan. Mr. G. A. McKendrick expressed his surprise that the council had decided to take such a sum out of the funds, after bringing , down the estimates, and Mr. J. PiHtington. was also, averse to transferring money after definitely voting it elsewhere.
Mr. P. R. Lipscombe opposed the motion, and supported the vote for the baths, Mr. W. C. Hill being of the same opinion. Replying, Mr. Vella said that if they wanted better streets and, roads they must stop this £800 being diverted from, revenue, and get the baths paid for lrv a loan. The Mayor. Mr. Morton, urged that councillors were mistaken in assuming that roads would suffer if the- baths were financed from revenue, for there were other allocations that could be used. The voting being even, the Mayor said there would he no change in the council's earlier decision.
