"When Judge Crawford was told at Southend that the costs of an action brought in the High Court to restrain an alleged nuisance by a neighbour amounted to £500, he remarked, "That is simply shocking!" The man who brought the action, Arthur Davidson, of Rayleigh, was applying for. his discharge from bankruptcy. He had attributed his insolvency to the action, which lie lost. "I do not know how long this state of things will continue," the judge said. "It is terrible. That action might have been brought in this court for a iifth of the cost." A solicitor said a big item in the costs was for taking a large number of witnesses from Southend to London. The Judge: There was absolutely no necessity for it.
