Australian Report Surprises London. DUKE OF YORK FOR CANADA? - a LONDON, April 25. r The "Daily News" says the fore- - ;1 shadowed appointment- of Sir Isaac Isaacs as Governor-General of Australia means a constitutional revolution. It says the report has caused surprise in / London and embarrassment at the a Dominions Office, where complete ignorance of the offer to Sir Isaac is proifessed. The paper says what is causing com- J' ment is the report that the post has been offered to any one, presumably " by the Australian Government, thus putting aside all precedents and convention. .i a A message from Ottawa says the report that an Australian has been - ■ recommended as Governor-General of the Commonwealth has revived gossip there as to who will succeed Viscount Willingdon at the expiration of his '• term next year. It is frequently _ sug- "• gested that the Duke of York will be named, and he is likely to be the first ' choice of Canadians. CANADIAN DENIAL.
SELECT NATIVE IF DESIRED. (Received 12 noon.) OTTAWA, April 25. The Premier, Mr. Mackenzie King, on Friday denied that before the appointment of Lord Willingdon, lie sounded the British Government to see if it were possible to appoint a Canadian. A London cable, quoted the "Daily News" to the effect that the Premier had raised the point at the time of Lord Byng's retirement, and that Mr. L. M. S. Amery had informed the Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. P. C. Larlcin, that it would be impossible. The Premier" said he had exchanged no communications with Mr. Amery, but with Mr. Baldwin, The question of appointing a Canadian had not been raised, nor had it been since. The Premier said his position was that Canada had a right to select a Canadian. The prime requirement was that the person should be acceptable to the Canadian Government. The Premier commented that Canada had been fortunate in her appointments.
