Bight years before her birthday Albert Smithhad embodied in a play the legend of a girl who saved her lover's life by clinging to the clapper of the bell which was to sound tile hour or his execution. The play, which was. called "Blanche Harlot,'*, was produced at the Surrey Theatre. During the' Wars of the Roses, Blanche's lover,. Neville, had been captured by the YorMsrs, but was reprieved. The pardon was late in coming and Blanche delayed the hour or the execution by clinging to the clapper or the bell. In lier version of the story Rose Hartwick changed the name or Blanche to Bessie and' staged the incident in the Civil War with Cromwell as the granter or the pardon.
