AVONDALE WOMEN'S CLUB.

The monthly meeting of the Avondale Women's Club was held in the Blockhouse Bay Picture Hall. The president, Miss Newton, occupied the chair. The congratulations of the club were extended to Mesdames Gill and Blssett on their election to the Avondale South school committee. The secretary was directed to 'send letters of appreciation to Mr. Pendlebui'y for his public-spirited work in beautifying, first the Hill Street corner, then the comer of Donovan Street; and to Mr. A. H. for presenting an artistic metal tablet to be placed on the polmtukawa at the corner of Hill Street. Miss Jean Begg, genera! secretary of the Y.W.C.A., wits the speaker for the afternoon, and explained the necessity for establishing a School for the training of social workers. Miss Begg, Who was trained for social work at Columbia University, U.S.A., said that While New Zetland leads the world in social legislation, the administration of our social service work i.poor: Because there is no central administrative body from which Workers may get information about families' ftlirl individuals, each group works independently, and in the consequent overlapping much waste occurs. Miss Begg, in iie 'course of her training, Worked with the Women ■police in a large city, and she spoke iii high praise of the preventive work done, attd what she expressed as "the mending of broken homes/' by which'a delinquent was not sent to ail institution, but was restored to her home after the cause of her lapse had 'been ascertained and dealt with. Such work could be done only by thoroughly trained social workei'B, and by the co-ordination of all social-Welfare organisations through what might be termed a central information bureau. Recitations-by Mrs. Eileen Riley, and Miss Margaret Chaplin wefe veijy much enjoyed. As a result of "a special collection among members the sum of £1 10/ will be added to the Obstetrical Fund.. The usual social chat and afternoon tea, served under the direction of Mrs. Egerton Gill, closed ail enjoyable afternoon.
