SUNSHINE AT KAWAKAWA Valquette Takes First Race.— Win for Partial Eclipse. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) • KAWAKAWA, this day. Tho Bay of Islands Racing Club held their annual meeting at Kawakawa was a large attendance and the course •was •in excellent order. - ' The meeting opened with the -Hokianga Handicap, for which De Ake was the only defection. Most money, £151, was entrusted .on Alloy, while Valquette ( £148) and -Merry Lu ( £141) also had friends'. From a good start Valquette was first to show up : from Furore and Merryv Lu, the 'last-named replacing Furore as they; raced along the. hack. Valquette was first into the straight from Merry-Lu and the others were well back. She went on to win by two lengths from. Merry'Lu, with Nassock a length; away ; third. Alloy was fourth, and the rest were strung out down the straight. . Favourite Wins Kaikohe. Macroom, Kildeer, Turn and Valquette were the defections in the Kaikohe Handicap. Partial Eclipse ( £356) was a solid favourite, with Ned Kelly ( £195) and Royal Lover ( £133) also in request, and the public sorted it up correctly, as they were all in the money. Ned Kelly began quickest, attended by Royal Lover and Partial Eclipse, and they ran along the back in that order. Partial Eclipse took charge entering the straight, and went on to win by half a length from Ned Kelly, with Royal Lover a similar distance away. Sunny. Morn was next, followed by Welcome Boy.
Outsider Wins Kawakawa Cup. Macvoom and Owairaka were not saddled up for the Kawakawa Cup, and Hakanoa was made a hot favourite, carrying £639, next in order being Glena Bay (£351) arid Right and Left (£76). Nassock, the winner, carried £G3 cinly, and paid double figures. Michael was the early leader from Hakanoa, Nassock, and Glena Bay, and. the e first-time-past the stand he was leading Eight and Left and Hakanoa, with Nassock next. Passing the stand the second time there was no change, and the positions were un-; altered until the home bend was reached. Eight and Left' had charge at this stage from Michael and Hakanoa. The lastnamed then moved up, but Nassock put in a. strong challenge and got up in time to beat Hakanoa by a. head, with Glena. Bay a half head away. Michael and Eight and Left were next.
