SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
On Wednesday afternoon a nierrj party of girls belonging to the Victoria League Girls' Committee visited the Veterans' Home, and presented an afternoon of music and song for the pleasure of the veterans. Tobacco was distributed among them. Major Wallingford thanked the girls. * « « * A progressive five hundred card party and dance was held on Wednesday evening in the Kumeu Public Hall, under the auspices of the Haeremai Oddfellows' Lodge. An enjoyable evening was spent. After supper the dancers held the floor, music, being provided by Hiss .L. Grant; and Mrs. Cook. The prize winners for the 500 competition were Mr. J. McKinlay and Mr. Cook. * » • ' * The Kumeu branch, of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met in the Public Hall on Wednesday afternoon, when Mrs. J. Wilson presided. Letters of thanks were received from the Maori Mission and the Francis Willard Home for parcels of clothing sent by the local union. -Mrs. Wilson gave an interesting address, in which she outlined her experiences, in the Maori Mission field at Matahi. * * » • An enjoyable social was given for Mr. and Mrs. Meikle, who are about to leave the Avondale Presbyterian Church, by the congregation on Wednesday night. Mr. Donaldson, in presenting Mrs. Meikle with a handbag, referred to the good work they had done for the church. Opportunity was also taken by Miss E. Houghton to present Mr.. Meikle with a travelling rug. Master Pringle presented a tie to Mr. Meikle from the Boys' Bible Class. Tea was served in the vestry, which was I decorated with flowers and greenery. The evening's enjoyment was closed by a song from Mrs. Young entitled "Will Ye Xo Come Back Again?" * » * •
An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the Business Girls' Chib rooms on Wednesday, when the Mount Albert Croquet Club held a bridge and five hundred afternoon. The winners were: Bridge Mrs. Middlebrook; five hundred, Mrs. v Hicks. Among those present were: Mrs. Page, Miss Lambe, Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Maxwell, Miss Thomson, Mrs. Angus, Mrs. Forsyth, Mrs. Whitfield, Mrs. James, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Finch, Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Jury, Mrs. Windsor, Mrs. Sharp, Mrs. Thornton, Mrs. Long, Mrs. Sharpies, Mrs/ J. Clayton, Mrs. Susinan and Mrs. Tavlor. ■ * « # * A surprise party, organised by Miss Phyllis Puddle, was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Shaw, Grey Lynn, on Wednesday evening. Games, dancing and competitions were the chief amusements cf the evening. Recitations were rendered by Miss E. Bankier. Among those present were: Misses P. Puddle, green frilled tulle .over, satin; F. Churchill, salmon pink georgette; E. Shaw, silver lame and satin; R. Salter, cream lace over shell pink crepe de chine; E. James, blue tinsel and crepe de chine; T. Pearce, maize georgette; J. Davies, blue georgette; PI Bankier, peach net over satin; B. Swinley, black lace over green satin; F... Monthey, Copenhagen blue georgette. * • * • An enjoyable evening was spent by the members of the San Toy School of Dancing on Wednesday evening, when a ladies' night was held in the 11 -val Oak Ha.ll. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Fink, rose ring velvet; Mrs. Couch, raven's wing satin; Mrs. Billings, black georgette; Miss K. Couch, cerise georgette; Miss Xaylor, spring green georgette with taffeta; Miss M. Cowley, black cliarineuse; Miss M. Robinson, daffodil ninon; Miss Phyllis Naylor, delphinium crepe de chine; Miss E. Hall, shell pink ninon with silver lace; Miss E'-.Dodd', apricot taffeta; Miss R. Dell, Wack taffeta and silver lace; Miss Geddye, red and white crepe de chine; Miss A; Robinson, shrimp pink, shawl to tone: Miss F. Kell, amythest taffeta and silver lace; Miss E. Robinson, turquoise taffeta; Miss Ruddle, spring green; Miss Taylor, leaf green.
Mrs. W. J. Foote held a card party at John Court's tearooms yesterday, to provide funds for a stall at the Empire Fete, to be held at Kohimarama. Bridge and five hundred were enjoyed.
