"NOT THIS SESSION."
PASSAGE OF THE BILL.. MR. ALLUM'S IMPRESSIONS. From what Jh\ J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, could gather while in Wellington there is not much chance of the bill amending the Transport Act being passed this session. He returned to Auckland this morning after having given evidence before the Select Committee of the House of Representatives, to which the bill had been referred. Both Mr. Allum and the chairman of the Christchurch Tramways Board were examined before the. committee yesterday. Mr. Allum made clear the Auckland Transport Board's attitude, which was that the Act of 1928 constituting the board should not be interfered with. He said the general impression among the people he met was that the bill would not be proceeded with this session. Asked what he thought about the question of a flat rate fare for the Auckland tramways, Mr. Allum said he had always been of opinion that such a scheme would not be in the interests of the travelling , public of Auckland, but as some of the local bodies within the board's district had interested themselves in the matter it seemed the duty of the board to procure all the data possible and place "it before the interested local bodies. They would then have the fullest information, and could discuss the matter thoroughly before coming to a decision. Judging from representations that had been made to him personally, said Mr. Allum, the opposition to bringing the flat rate fare on the Auckland trams was overwhelming.
