GRANTS FROM HOME.
i » ASSISTING SETTLEMENT. "It is remarkable that tho Government has not availed itself of the offer, made by the British Government, that other Dominions have seized upon," remarked Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, president of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League at a meeting of the executive this afternoon, when a suggestion was mado that the British Government should be written to with a view to getting a grant from it for individual immigrants who were coming to New Zealand to go on the land. It Avas stated in a communication from Mr. C. Mackley that the British Government granted considerable sums of money each year to settlement on certain areas in Western Australia. He advocated that the Government should approach the Home authorities for similar assistance in New Zealand.
The chairman (Mr. W. J. Holdsworth) did not think it would be advisable for the league to approach the British Government although it was up to it to go on stressing the important aspect of the immigration question .outlined. The matter had not been overlooked by the league, which had stressed the need for assistance of the kind ever since its
inception
