TRANSPORT TROUBLE.
. REPLY TO UNION. STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN. "GET ON WITH THE WORK." s The trouble which has arisen between the Auckland Transport Board and the Auckland Tramways Union was referred to to-day by the chairman of the board (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) who said that he did not propose to traverse the last published'statement from the union in detail. The union had asked what there was to arbitrate about. My point is, said Mr. Allum, that the resolution which was passed by the union and became a subject for comment was an improper one and calculated to discourage employees from doing their duty; that it should never have been passed, and that when the union's attention was called to.it it should have been rescinded. If there was nothing to arbitrate about, why the constant statements in the Press ? The board was prepared to take the ruling of some impartial and' competent person upon the question and to act in accordance with his decision. Why was not the union prepared to.do the same? That would be an opportunity to settle the matter one way'or .the ; other, and both parties should be prepared loyally to accept the decision, and give effect.-to- it. -; "This "would do away with the possibility of further irritation in the serTice, and enable both parties to get on with the work that, is be dqney* , ' said Mr. Aljuni in' conclusion.
