ASSAULT ON GIRL.

YOUTH RECOMMENDED TO MERCY. COMMENT BY THE JUDGE. (By Telegraph.—Own Conespondent.) HAMILTON, this day.

John Stewart Jeffrej', aged 18, was found guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy, on a charge of committing an indecent assault on a girl of 20 at Frankton on February 24, when taking her home from a dance. On a charge of attempting to commit rape, he was acquitted. When Jeffrey came up for sentence this morning, Sir Alexander Herdman said the case had caused him considerable anxiety. He thought the jury was justified in its recommendation, and_ that prisoner was encouraged by the girl in his familiarity. Prisoner was sentenced to be detained in a Borstal institution for a period not exceeding two years.
