CHARGE DISMISSED.
NO EVIDENCE OFFERED. WRONG NAME LEADS TO ARREST. Through travelling under a name that was not his own, James Augustus McCauley (49), ship's fitter, was arrested a week ago. He appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of deserting the s.s. Rualiine at Wellington on August 24, 1927. In stating that he would offer no evidence, Chief Detective Hammond said McCauley arrived on the Ulimaroa from Sydney, and desired to go to Vancouver. When he requested a passport it was found that a man of the same name was wanted on warrant for deserting the Rualiine. McCauley's papers were made out in the name of James Augustus McCauley, the name he had been going under. However, this was not his correct name. His real name was James Rossiter. "Why he chooses to be known as McCauley and what is his mission, of course, we don't know. However, it cost him a week in gaol on remand," said Mr. Hammond. Mr. Hunt dismissed the charge against Rossiter.
