PENTECOST TO-DAY.

RELIGIOUS significance; CLOSE JEWISH HOLIDAY. Jewish people the world over observe to-day, Pentecost, as an occasion of solemn festival. It is so called because it is celebrated on the fiftieth day (seven weeks) after the second day of the Passover. Therefore it is also known as the "Feast of Weeks," at which the first fruits of the harvest were offered in thanksgiving, but later. generations of the race came generally to regard the festival as commemorative of the gift of the Law on the fiftieth day after the departure from Egypt. * This morning a special service was held at the Synagogue, the Rev. A. S. Goldstein giving a discourse appropriate to the occasion. Pentecost is also a festival of the Roman Catholic and other churches" in commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles.
