Leaders Object To Downing
Street Homes.
LIBERAL MAY JOIN CABINET,
(Australian and X.Z. Press Association.)
(Received 2 p.m.)
LONDON, June 6.
While Mr. Baldwin was absent in the forenoon fixing up his new home in the West End Mr. Mac Donald, Mr. Snowdert and Mr. Thomas arrived unannounced at No. 10, Downing Street They conferred for an hour and Mr. Mac Donald afterwards issued the statement that the unemployment scheme had been started.
This tends to confirm the selection of Mr. Thomas to carry out the task. Mr. Mac Donald hinted, when speaking of Labour's plans in the Albert Hall speech of April 27, that unless the transport system, such as roads, bridges and power, were placed on a modern footing Britain would be unable to compete in neutral markets.
It is expected that Mr. Mac Donald will announce his Cabinet to-morrow night. There is a distinct possibility that Lord Sankey will fill the Lord Chancellorship.
A new suggestion is that the Liberal K.C., Mr. J. 0. Jowitt,' will be invited to be Attorney-General. The "Daily Herald" says definitely he is joining the Labour party, also that Mr. G. .Lansbury will assist Mr. J. H. Thomas.
Lobby correspondents still eay that the situation threatens to be unprecedented since Walpole, the first occupant of No. 10, Downing Street. Mr. MacDonald does not desire to dig up the roots from his Hampstead home and proposes to use the official residence only as an office for a Cabinet meeting place and not as a home.
Mr. Philip Snowden does not desire to live at No. 11 and Mr. J. K. Clynes has stated that in no circumstances would he again occupy it.
The latest suggestion is that Mr. Thomas may be the occupant, though he may be loth to leave his lovely home at Dulwich.
