CARRIED ON BUSINESS.

COMPANIES WITHOUT LICENSES. POLICE COURT PROSECUTIONS FIFTEEN FIRMS FINED. Carrying on business without first obtaining licenses from the Commissioner of Stamp Duties is an expensive matter, as fifteen companies discovered at the Police Court this morning, when they were prosecuted for breaches of the. Stamp Duties Act. Mr. V. N. Hubble, who prosecuted for tlie Commissioner of Stamp Duties, said these were the first prosecutions this year. A number of other companies would be prosecuted next week. Counsel said companies were liable for a penalty of £20 each month they carried on business without a license. In all the cases before the Court this morning, the defendants had been written to and warned in December last. On January 10 of the present year they were again warned to pay, when a printed circular was posted to them, requesting licenses to be taken out. Seven days were allowed to do this, otherwise prosecutions would follow. "Failure to pay fees has become so extensive that the Department has had to have specially printed forms prepared to send to defaulters," added Mr. Hubble. "This has put the Department to a whole lot of trouble. In some cases the failure to take out the annual license has been due to an oversight, but all the same the trouble has been caused. In some cases the annual license fee is a < small as 2/, companies being required to pay only 1/ on every £100 of capital." The following are companies fined by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning, together with the fines imposed:— British' Associated Oil Company, Ltd., £3 and costs; D. and A. Brown, Ltd., £3; Enterprise Builders, Ltd., 10/, plus costs; T. T.
