BROADCAST IN CANADA

Commission Studying European Conditions. IMPRESSED BY 8.8.C. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, March 6. The members of the Royal Commission appointed by the Canadian Government to make recommendations about broadcasting in Canada are about to return home after having spent a month in London. They also visited Geneva, Berlin, The Hague, Brussels and Paris. On their return to Canada, where at present radio broadcasting is carried on almost entirely by * private enterprise, the commissioners will confer with the provincial authorities in every province. It is stated that Germany's policy of decentralising the control of radio programmes and the high standard of the public service maintained by the British Broadcasting Corporation, particularly impressed the commission. Sir John Aird, chairman, stated in an interview that whatever policy of national broadcasting might be recommended, whether under private enterprise or State ownership, the commissioners hoped that by the time a chain of powerful stations' had been built across Canada it would be possible to arrange for a regular weekly programme of British broadcasting for Canadian listeners.
