IN PORT FOR WINTER.
ELEAKOB BOIXXNO ARRIVES* COMMANDER BYRD'S ORDER. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUXEDIX, Wednesday. Undamaged by the buffetings of heavy gales, the Antarctic expedition supply ship Eleanor Boiling returned to Dunediu this afternoon. She left Duncdin on February 19, and a week later, when she was 1200 miles south of Tairoa Heads, she was ordered by Commander Byrd to return to Dunedin and lay up for the winter. Commander Byrd explained that he was forced to order the ship back owing to heavy ice forming in the Bay of Whales and consequently he would not risk the lives of the men or take any chance of losing the ship. He al*o stated in his message that he had sufficient supplies on the Barrier to last the 42 men for a year. "We did not even get as far as the icepack," said Captain Brown. "We had every hope of getting through before the ice closed in again, but we were doomed to disappointment." Just before Cap-
tain Brown received instructions to return to Dunedin numerous icebergs vert sighted. Some of them were fairly dot* to the ship, while other* were tome distance south. The whole of the Boiling's cargo wffl be discharged and stored in one of the wharf sheds. The ship will then lay up at Port Chalmers for the winter. Captain Brown said the Eleanor Bolling's wireless operators had been in constant touch with the City of Xew York. The latter ship had been successful in clearing the ice in the Ross Sea and was now steaming through open water. She should reach port about March 11, and will also lay up at Port Chalmers for the winter.
