RIVER SILTING.
TROUBLE IN THE WAIKATO. CONFERENCE ON TUESDAY NEXT. (Bj- Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. A serious problem has been created by the gradual silting of the Waikato River. The position becomes worse each year, especially in the summer months when the water is low, making navigation more and more difficult. According to Captain C. Roose it 13 futile to re.sist river encroachments by little local works, and he is convinced that the only sensible course is to keep siltage down by dredging, aided to some extent by groins, thus keeping the river within the channel. This would involve considerable initial outlay, but small works were only so much money wasted. A big conference is to be' held at Hamilton on Tuesday next to deal with river silting.
