PHYSICALLY UNFIT.

! FARM COLONY PROPOSED. NEGATIVED BY HOSPITAL BOARD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Mrs. F. K. Preston moved at the Hospital Board meeting that the Government be urged to establish a farm I coiony as the most effective means of [dealing with those of both sexes who ! are physically unfit to maintain themselves. "I would suggest." said Mrs. Preston, "a property of not less than 100 acres, huts to be built, and quarters for married couples, to be served by a communal kitchen. The men under supervision could do the work of the kitchen garden, flower garden, fruit-growing, tree planting, cropping, poultry, bess, sheep, and cows. I contend that where men and women have for long to accept help from the board they soon lose sense of th?ir moral responsibilities, and become wholly and permanently charges on the State, whereas, could they be taught some 1 of the above occupations, they would be adding to the production of the country, and regaining their selfrespect. besides fitting themselves to take positions-in the country; employer* fould apply at the headquarters for helpers. Several members, while commending Mrs. Preston's object, expressed doubt as to the practicability of successfully carrving out such a scheme. The motion was negatived.
