SUBURBAN TRANSPORT.

MOUNT ROSKILL'S POSITION.

Transport matters were discussed last night by the Mount Roskill Road Board, when the chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones, expressed his. disappointment with the decision of the Auckland Transport Board to limit their suggested loan proposal to £300,000, for the extension of the tramway service, etc. He thought the Transport Board should go straight out for the full amount of £650,000 required to serve the whole area. Mr. Jones said he had no objection to the proposed extension to Point Chevalier and elsewhere, but he knew what human nature was, and he could not help thinking that when these services were established the residents there would take little or no interest in extensions to other parts of the suburbs. He therefore moved and it was agreed, "That the Mount Eden Borough Council be asked to convene a meeting of local bodies with a view to recommending the Transport Board to come out with a complete scheme in one loan proposal." Mr. E. A. Pearce, who seconded the resolution, expressed the opinion that the proposal to raise a loan of £300,000 instead of the larger amount would defeat itself, for the area not served by the immediate proposal would give it very little support, just as those who were to be served at once would then lose interest in further extensions. Mr. G. E. Tansley supported the principle, although he thought the first scheme would be sanctioned, the only difficulty being to get the loan to cover the rest of the area.

Mr. S. I. Goodall also thought it would be advisable to raise one loan for the larger scheme. It would not be necessary to have the whole of the work done simultaneously. It wa s essential, however, to get it all authorised in one proposal for the wider the area the more support the loan would receive. The board also decided to ask the Transport Board to improve the Buckland Road bus service and the service tf Waikowhai and to allow aome sort of concession tickets on both routes.
